Thank you for asking, Lance.

My way to contribute used to be via teaching and scientific research. But my present contributions are theologically oriented. I am trying to understand God, and to share my simlpe reflections. The most recent item is a short letter about God, addressed to our six year old grand daughter Emily. You need to get the audience's attention and hold it, and you want what you say to be memorable. But when that becomes the overriding concern, or the only concern, all you have is fluff, and that is a problem, especially when it applies to the serious business of social justice and democratic participation.Lance Stratehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13033954765699126246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889578221932408406.post-13857192449395566922013-12-22T15:32:07.675-05:002013-12-22T15:32:07.675-05:00Thank you for an interesting article, Lance. You wrote: "The broader question that concerns both Arendt and Postman is whether serious discourse, be it educational, religious, or political, can survive the imperative to make everything as entertaining as possible."

The answer to this question depends on how the term "entertaining" is defined. Some forms of entertainment are helpful. I am thinking about original presentations that are not clear or boring. Turning them into something more clear, and more pleasurable should be applauded. Each new discourse should be evaluated on its merit. But that does not mean generalizations are not useful; they are the essence of thinking.

Good luck with your book,

Ludwik KowalskiLudwik Kowalskihttp://csam.montclair.edu/~kowalski/life/intro.htmlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889578221932408406.post-34245913048614565212013-09-09T12:13:52.465-04:002013-09-09T12:13:52.465-04:00Thank you, Rabbi. The word "...Thank you for correcting me, Lance. The word "temporary" was important. The description of chapter 9 should have been as follows:

Moses was an exceptional prophet. Later prophets are not allowed to "make any changes whatsoever in the Torah and the commandments contained therein." Then Maimonides mentions "temporary" situations, when all transgressions are acceptable, except idolatry. He is probably referring to situations in which one is forced to transgress in order to survive. What would Maimonides say about later attempts to reform traditional Jewish theology? He would probably label them as sinful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889578221932408406.post-53217945227039841942013-03-22T22:15:33.938-04:002013-03-22T22:15:33.938-04:00My uncle Aaron Seltzer’s memorabilia have been arc...My uncle Aaron Seltzer’s memorabilia have been archived at the Brooklyn College Library/Kaplan Boxing Collection.

(From the Miami Herald, 2008)
A Brooklyn College professor has started a campaign to preserve and display the boxing mementos of late Kendall (Florida) resident Hank Kaplan.

.......Kaplan was considered boxing's preeminent historian. The two-car garage in his Kendall home became a library to thousands of boxing archives. Boxing writers, authors, researchers, filmmakers or anyone with an affinity for the sport marveled at Kaplan's collection of books, newspaper and magazine clippings and other boxing memorabilia after a visit.

In his will, Kaplan donated the library's archives to Brooklyn College. Kaplan was born in Brooklyn before settling in South Florida in the early 1950s.

An estimated 2,000 boxes of items were removed from Kaplan's home and transferred to Brooklyn College in February (2008). According to Professor Anthony Cucchiara, an independent appraisal done after the items were transferred to Brooklyn lists the library's value at $2.94 million, ''And that appraisal might be a conservative one,'' Cucchiara said. ``This is a national resource.''

Notice of Kaplan's archives has resulted in the additional donation of items.

''People, whose fathers or uncles were in boxing, had items they didn't know what to do with,'' Cucchiara said. ``Now those items will be part of the library.''

Brooklyn College Library/Kaplan Boxing Collection
Anthony Cucchiara, 2900 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11210.Linda Kowalskinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889578221932408406.post-63190904561941009912013-03-14T13:56:08.393-04:002013-03-14T13:56:08.393-04:00Kudos to Lauren and Amy!Kudos to Lauren and Amy!Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10572921462666238555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7889578221932408406.post-42857946256570774252013-03-13T21:51:07.625-04:002013-03-13T21:51:07.625-04:00So I think this is a sign of even better things to...So I think this is a sign of even better things to come from our Congregation and for the Reform Jewish community in our area.
