Hello to All!

On Sunday, Oct. 30th, volunteers from Adas Emuno served dinner to 150 people at the shelter in Hackensack. A most sincere "thank you" to all who helped with the planning and shopping as well as to those who gave up time on a Sunday to cook, deliver, set up, serve and clean up: Andrea Feinstein, Julie Segal, Judy Aronson, Kerri Klein, Amy Chartoff, Lisa Klein, Randi and Sean Irby, Lauren Rowland and Aaron Fischer, Pearl and Ron Waxman, Cheryl and Richard Alicchio, Virginia Gitter, Carol and Jerry Bodian, Fanny and Michael Fishbein, Sandy Zornek, Jody Pugach, Rachel Capote and Norm Rosen. A very special thank you to Marilyn Katz for coordinating with "Family Promise" and for being involved throughout the process.

Our High Holy Days food collection brought in approximately 50 bags of groceries. What a wonderful showing by our very generous congregants! Thank you also to Norm Rosen for picking up the bags [donated by Shop Rite] and for his help in attaching the list of needed grocery items. Please remember also that we will collect food items when we host the Leonia Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on November 21st.

Monday, November 6th is Mitzvah Day. This committee, along with the religious school, collected school supplies to be given to children in need.

New Program Coming to Adas Emuno

On Sunday, December 11th, tables will be set up in the social hall, each one representing an organization working to "heal" the world. For each donation of $1.80 and up (your discretion), you will receive a blank greeting card (beautifully designed by Lauren Rowland) along with a small, business-sized card, stating that a donation was made (in honor of whomever your recipient is) and to which organization. These make very special gifts from a child to a family member, for the person who has everything, as part of a larger gift, etc. It's a win, win for everyone! Also, the program is taking place just before holiday time. Please plan to shop with us. Students from our religious school will be attending at 11:30. They will be met with a short presentation. Parents are asked to join them. We hope that YOU will join us, too. Please stop by between 12 noon to 1pm (ish). Thanksgiving Day is oh so close. May yours be filled with loved ones and lots of stuffing!

Hello to All!

I would like to begin this "end of summer" column by sincerely thanking everyone who donated food for our "children friendly" food drive this summer. Two deliveries were made to the Center for Food Action in Englewood and judging by the many empty spaces on the shelves, donations were quickly put to good use! As in the past, we will be handing out grocery bags after Rosh Hashanah services with a list of items needed most by CFNA, to be delivered through the end of October.

And again from the Center for Food Action... they are sponsoring a program on September 11 (National Day of Service and Remembrance) where volunteers will pack weekend snack bags for children of low income families. This project is open to everyone; no age limitations. Please check the email you received from this congregation on July 31st. Or visit www.cfanj.org to register, and please indicate that you are with Congregation Adas Emuno!

Thinking ahead, acting now... Adas Emuno will once again cook/serve dinner at the shelter in Hackensack on Sunday, October 30th. Since this date comes just days after the Jewish holidays, preparations have already begun. The menu will be made up of meat loaf, mixed vegetables and potatoes. We begin setting up at 4:00 PM, then serve and clean up by 6:30. We can use lots of cooks, as we have been told to expect 150 people. If at all possible, please let me know if you will serve &/or cook by Monday, SEPTEMBER 26TH. Anyone 14 and over can serve. Please use the email at the end of this column. Many thanks!

A grape juice/challah delivery program will soon begin. Members who are home­bound will receive juice and challah for Shabbat, once a month.

In conjunction with the Religious School, we will be collecting school supplies from September 25th through October 25th for Mitzvah Day. Donations can be brought to the school or placed in the box at the back of the Social Hall. We will deliver them in time for Mitzvah Day, which is November 6th.

Stay tuned for some new, as well as some not so new, social action programs which have been planned for the coming months! And feel free to join us at our next meeting on Thursday, September 22nd at 7:30 PM.

During the month of October, the Social Action Committee, along with the Religious School, collected school supplies for Mitzvah Day. Thank you to all of our congregants who made this a successful project! Special thanks to School Director, Cantor Sandy Horowitz, for reaching out to school families and to the parents who helped by transferring donations left at the school to the Social Hall.

We recently cooked for and served 110+ folks at the shelter in Hackensack. Volunteers cooked extraordinary amounts of delectable dishes and graciously served the hungry guests. (Many of congregants who helped out had also worked on the "Treats & Treasures" event just days earlier!) To all who cooked, served, shopped and/or schlepped, please know that your culinary skills were greatly appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed by those who partook of the meal, as those of us serving witnessed. Thanks so very, very much to Jody, Randi, Archer, Pearl, Ron, Virginia, Kim M., Claudine, Lauren, Doris, Carol, Sandy Z., Norman and Michael F. Special thanks and recognition go to Ethan Irby and Tate Irby as the "youngsters" on our team. You represented Adas Emuno, as well as yourselves, with a presence to be proud of. And to Marilyn, who set this up with Family Promise and responded to my emails and phone calls with a" contagious calm"; your work each year regarding this dinner has been and continues to be invaluable; a very special thanks!

Coming up: Winter Clothing Drive, December 20th-January 17th. All winter clothing in good condition, from infant sizes on up. To be donated to the thrift shop in Bergenfield, run by the Council of Jewish Women. Please leave donations in the back of the social hall. Thank you!

September Social Action Update

Thank you so much to our congregants who continued to bring food products during the summer months to be donated to the Center for Food Action. Shelves have reportedly been on the empty side at many food banks, so contributions have been especially appreciated.

Although we have an ongoing collection of food, cleaning products, toiletries, etc. throughout the year, for our special, annual High Holy Days Food Drive, bags will be distributed at the Erev Rosh Hashanah Service along with a list of items most needed by the Center for FoodAction. Please fill up the bags with nonperishable foods and return to the temple, if possible, for Yom Kippur. Please take note that foods cannot be open and that expiration dates need to be adhered to. Thank you!

During the first few weeks in October, the Social Action Committee, along with the Religious School, will be collecting school supplies. Please leave donations in the back of the social hall. These will be brought to another congregation which, in turn, will fill backpacks that they will be collecting. This is all being done for Mitzvah Day, which is on Sunday, November 1st.

And speaking of Mitzvah Day... that is the day we will be cooking for and serving at the shelter in Hackensack. Since this is only a few days after our "Treats and Treasures" fundraiser, the menu is being kept quite simple: we will be serving chicken [you can buy it already cooked or make it yourself!], salad, simple sides such as potatoes, noodles, etc., plus cake and fruit. And remember, anyone can help with the cooking, and anyone 14 and older can help to serve! Specifics will follow so please watch for email updates!

Shalom!

As I’m writing this column, we just had our first Shabbat Family Service of the year, featuring the Seventh grade–they were great! They led prayers and songs throughout the service, and shared their thoughts about the mitzvah of caring for the environment. Thank you to Rabbi Schwartz and their teachers, Sabina Albirt and Michael Dworkis, for preparing them. Our next two Shabbat Family Services are coming up, led by the Fifth and Sixth grades; everyone is encouraged to attend these special services, and support our students ́ participation in religious worship.

Tot Mitzvah is our new program for pre-school age children, led by Doris White. With (free!) programs six times during the year, we welcome anyone who would like to join in the fun. Come spend an hour of music, arts and crafts and stories with your little one – this month Doris will be having an early Chanukah celebration with the tots on November 23rd.

Thank you to everyone who so generously brought in books for our October Book Drive, as we participated in the Jewish Federation of NJ’s Annual Mitzvah Day. These will help so many students in our area who are in need of books.

I want to begin this column by thanking everyone who donated food during the summer months.  By the time you read this, two deliveries will have been made to the Center for Food Action during July and August.

Our food drive is ongoing with a special one being held during the High Holy Days.  Paper bags will be given out on Erev Rosh Hashanah, along with a list of items most needed.  Please return your donations when you attend Kol Nidre services or at your earliest convenience. 

A number of other social action projects are in the works for this coming year.  Those which are coming up in the next few months are:

Sunday, November 2: Mitzvah Day--Program TBA

 November 9-23: ADULT WINTER OUTERWEAR collection  [including coats, jackets, boots, scarves, hats, gloves/mittens] 

Sunday, December 7: Cooking/serving dinner at the shelter in Hackensack [ages 14 and up to set up/ serve; no age restrictions for home cooking!]          Details to follow.

Cantor Sandy Horowitz and I have been working on projects which will involve our Religious School students; Stay tuned!

Social Action September!

The first order of business for this article is to sincerely thank everyone in this wonderful congregation for the food donations. When these items were dropped off at the Center for Food Action, it was sad to see how desperately they were needed. Many of the shelves were crying out for food. We supplied about five bags of groceries. We can’t stop. Please continue to bring nonperishable food items to the temple. 

At this time, we have two tentative dates to help the community: 

Sunday, November 4, 2012 is Mitzvah Day: We will be working with Bonim Builders to paint a classroom at Children's Aid and Family Services in Paramus, from 8:30 AM to Noon. Anyone 12 and up is welcome to join in. 

Sunday, January 27, 2013: We are planning to cook and serve dinner to residents and walk-ins at the shelter in Hackensack. This is through Family Promise of Bergen County. The time is late afternoon for about two hours. The minimum age limit is 14 years. We would need cooks and servers. 

The next meeting for the Social Action Committee is set for Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 7:30 PM. New members are very welcome! Please note that most of the work is not done at the meetings.
