Social Action at the Start of the Year

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Hello All!

I am taking us back to November 5th, when many, many (did I mention many?) members cooked and/or served some very hungry and grateful folks at the shelter in Hackensack. Sincerest thanks to all who gave up their Sunday. We all came away, as we always do, feeling different.

Then came the Center for Food Action, asking us to have a food drive for Thanksgiving items, and we obliged. I delivered approximately eight bags of groceries while others from the congregation brought frozen turkeys. Once again, our small but mighty membership came through. Can’t thank you all enough!

Next was our Mitzvah Mall on December 3rd and it was a major success! It was so, not only because we raised over $700 for the organizations we were representing, but because our wonderful students were so very engaged in what it was all about. Then again, it didn't hurt having Forrest and Andy there, a therapy dog and a service dog, with their handler, Carol, to make us "oo and ahhh".

So, I offer special thanks all around, to members of the Social Action Committee who worked on this event behind the scenes as well as on the day of; to our students, parents and general membership for showing support to this program; to Cantor Horowitz and our school staff for their assistance; to the School Committee for working with me in so many ways, and to Rabbi Schwartz, whose enthusiasm in his welcome speech was contagious and who, once again, offered to match all donations from his discretionary fund.

It’s time for Souper Bowl III at Adas Emuno! Once again, we will be battling against “Team Hunger” during the month of January, up through Sunday, February 4th (the date of that other Super Bowl).

Please bring soup to the temple during this time and let's see if “Team A.E.” can continue it’s winning streak against “Team Hunger” for the third year in a row!

With a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped to bring tikkun olam, healing of the world, throughout 2017, I wish you a happy and healthy 2018.

Social Action Activities

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Hi All!

There’s been a lot of activity surrounding Social Action and Adas Emuno!

On September 11th, Day of Service and Remembrance, a number of our congregants took part in the Center for Food Action's program of making up week-end snack bags for children in need.  Over 4,000 bags were made up.  Thank you to all who participated.

The food collection held during the High Holy Days yielded bags plus one case of groceries.  This year’s drive was in conjunction with Blake Klein's Bar Mitzvah project, in which he raised money, collected food (at the Leonia Rec Center) and also assisted in our collection… all for the CFA! Thank you to Blake and thank you to everyone who donated!

Social Action met a social evening out as over 20 of our members spent a fun evening at Ethical Brew, a musical venue sponsored by the Ethical Culture Center in Teaneck.  We listened to some great folk music, and half of all proceeds from ticket sales went to a social action program, chosen by the entertainers. It was a win-win evening!

Sunday, December 3Mitzvah Mall. Please come and support some very special organizations, all while you work on your holiday “shopping” list with meaningful “gifts” to share with those whom you buy on behalf of. The presentation is from 11:30-12 noon.  "Shopping" continues through 1:00 although the “mall” will remain open longer if you let us know you will be a bit late. If you recall from last year, this event was a great success.

January
We will be starting a knitting/crocheting group! The first project will be to make caps for newborn babies at Holy Name Hospital. Interested?  Email me so we can work out a time for all to meet.

Some volunteer opportunities to consider:

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge, Inc.  Paws-in-Hand Program. This organization works to support schools for children with special needs through specially trained animals.  It provides the animals plus the education needed for the success of the program.  It is active in Bergen and Passaic County schools. Call 201-337- 5180 or email humaneed at rbari.org.

Aviation Hall of Fame of NJ
Its purpose is to educate about NJ's history in this field and to encourage young people to consider careers in the aerospace industry.  Various volunteer opportunities available, beginning at age 16.

Color A Smile
So easy even a child can do it... and many do! Consider for a community service/b’nei mitzvah project, rainy day project, getting together with friends for a special reason project, Youth Group project, etc. Go to colorasmile.org./volunteer, then click on Volunteer to Color, for further instructions.

Wishing everyone a fun-filled, stuffing-filled, Happy Thanksgiving!!

Social Action Update

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Hello to All!

On Sunday, Oct. 30th, volunteers from Adas Emuno served dinner to 150 people at the shelter in Hackensack. A most sincere "thank you" to all who helped with the planning and shopping as well as to those who gave up time on a Sunday to cook, deliver, set up, serve and clean up: Andrea Feinstein, Julie Segal, Judy Aronson, Kerri Klein, Amy Chartoff, Lisa Klein, Randi and Sean Irby, Lauren Rowland and Aaron Fischer, Pearl and Ron Waxman, Cheryl and Richard Alicchio, Virginia Gitter, Carol and Jerry Bodian, Fanny and Michael Fishbein, Sandy Zornek, Jody Pugach, Rachel Capote and Norm Rosen. A very special thank you to Marilyn Katz for coordinating with "Family Promise" and for being involved throughout the process.

Our High Holy Days food collection brought in approximately 50 bags of groceries. What a wonderful showing by our very generous congregants! Thank you also to Norm Rosen for picking up the bags [donated by Shop Rite] and for his help in attaching the list of needed grocery items. Please remember also that we will collect food items when we host the Leonia Interfaith Thanksgiving Service on November 21st.

Monday, November 6th is Mitzvah Day. This committee, along with the religious school, collected school supplies to be given to children in need.

New Program Coming to Adas Emuno

On Sunday, December 11th, tables will be set up in the social hall, each one representing an organization working to "heal" the world. For each donation of $1.80 and up (your discretion), you will receive a blank greeting card (beautifully designed by Lauren Rowland) along with a small, business-sized card, stating that a donation was made (in honor of whomever your recipient is) and to which organization. These make very special gifts from a child to a family member, for the person who has everything, as part of a larger gift, etc. It's a win, win for everyone! Also, the program is taking place just before holiday time. Please plan to shop with us. Students from our religious school will be attending at 11:30. They will be met with a short presentation. Parents are asked to join them. We hope that YOU will join us, too. Please stop by between 12 noon to 1pm (ish). Thanksgiving Day is oh so close. May yours be filled with loved ones and lots of stuffing!

L'Shalom,

Annette
