Social Action Spring

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Hello All!

The number of the moment is 183! That is how many items of soup we collected and donated to the Center for Food Action… and during one very, very cold winter! Thank you to all who took part in our "Souper Bowl"!

We are now working with the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey as this organization sponsors its March Mega Food Drive. Please bring non-perishable foods to the vestry room between now and March 19, and place in our Community Purim Baskets. Donations will be brought to the JFNNJ office and from there distributed to local food pantries.

Another chance to help: On Sunday, March 25th, families are being asked to help sort the food collected as well as pack week-end snack packs for children in need. Please go to www.jfnnj.org/fooddrive to register and to find a list of most needed food items. There are no age limitations to participate!

Save the Date: Sunday, May 6

For the third year, our congregation will be part of Family Promise Hike or Bike in Ridgewood. This event raises money for homeless, working families with children. Participants can choose to hike (walk through town) or bike for three miles, or bike for 15 miles. There are lots of family activities plus refreshments. Stay tuned for more information!

Social Action Committee Meeting: Thursday March 15 from 6:30-7:30 PM. New Members Welcome! I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to those who answered our call to support March for Our Lives by making a donation or purchasing merchandise. Marchforourlives.com

Fall Out For Social Action!

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Hello to All!

Before discussing the up and coming programs being planned by the Social Action Committee, a sincere thank you needs to go out to everyone who brought in food during our "children friendly" summer food collection. It was most appreciated. We now return to a general food collection. Also, please remember to pick up your grocery bag with the Center for Food Action's list of most needed foods at the Rosh Hashanah service, and return (filled!), if possible, by Yom Kippur. Of course, donations are accepted after that, as well.

9-11, National Day of Service & Remembrance: Help the Center for Food Action to pack up week-end snacks for children in need. Two locations: Englewood Field Club (1 PM-3 PM or 3:30-5:30) or Lincoln Tech School in Mahwah (3:30-5:30]. $45 per person to participate; children under 10 are free. Register at cfanj.org or call 201-529-2029, ext. 27. Perfect bar/bat mitzvah project!

Saturday, September 16th, 8 PM Join fellow congregants for an evening out where a social event meets social action! Come listen to some soulful, folk music in a small, intimate setting. Performers choose an organization which will receive 50% of the proceeds. It all happens at the Ethical Brew in Teaneck. Please watch for emails or check with Virginia Gitter or me. Hope to see you there!

Social Action Committee Meeting Monday, October 16, 7:30 PM in the Social Hall. Please join us as we plan the year with new and "repeat" programming!

IMPORTANT⏤We will once again be cooking for and serving at the shelter in Hackensack on Sunday, November 5th. This is one of those "all hands on deck" programs, as we will be cooking for somewhere around 150 people. Won't you please plan to help cook and to deliver your food to the shelter? We will also need about 10 servers. Details will follow as the date comes closer, including timing and menu. Thank you, in advance!

Look for info regarding our new knitting group, coming soon!

Spring into Social Action

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Hello to All!

Team A.E. 101 and Team Hunger 0!  That was the final score for our "Souper Bowl ll".  Thank you so very much to everyone who donated soup items.  This is definitely the time of year to eat soup and 101 cans, cartons, etc. of this comfort food went a long way to warm up and fill up some hungry folks.

Happening now: our Adas Emuno community, giant-sized Shaloch Manot Basket Food Collection!  The basket area, in the vestry, will be adorned with fun, bright, Purim decorations, so it can't be missed!  Any food collected through March will be donated to the Jewish Federation's March Food Drive (if it is held this year) or to the Center for Food Action in Englewood.  Coming for the Purim Spiel?  That would be a great time to bring a food item for each person in your party… just a thought!

Ever wonder what to do with your extra, kosher for Passover, non perishable foods left after the holiday ends?  Well, here's the solution!  Bring them to the vestry room in the temple by the end of April and they will be given to Helping Hands, located in Teaneck.

New Event for our Congregation: Family Promise, the organization in Bergen County that shelters and supports homeless, working families with children, will be holding their annual "Hike or Bike" event on Sunday, May 5th, in Ridgewood.  Three of us from the temple took part in this program last year. It was great fun for a great cause and the people in charge could not have been more helpful, caring or grateful. So, we decided to try it as a temple event for this year. The "hike" goes for 3 miles (think "walk through the neighborhood"!) and the "bike" is 15 miles, with at least part of it along a bike path.  There is also a "hike or trike" for little ones under age 5, plus food, music, games, etc. for all. Please save the date, and look for details to come, including how to register, fees (this money is used for the many programs/assistance offered by Family Promise) and times of the events.  It's a wonderful way to spend a day with family, friends and fellow congregants.

Our next Social Action Committee meeting will be on Wednesday, March 15 at 7:30 PM in the Social Hall. All are welcome to join us to bring ideas for future programs and input on our current projects. A happy and healthy new year to all!

Last but not least! A special thank you to all who donated to our Community Purim Basket Food Drive! Over seven full bags of food were delivered from Adas Emuno to the office of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey as part of their Mega Food Drive. Good for us!

****NEW PROGRAM****

Sunday, May 22
Pre-Memorial Day Event

We will be going to Mount Moriah Cemetery, a Jewish cemetery in Fairview on Fairview Avenue (better known as Dan Kelly's Hill in days gone by) to place American flags on the graves of service men and women. We will not only provide the flags but will also provide a pizza lunch, in the social hall, beforehand, for anyone going. IMPORTANT: Any student attending must have parents with them at the luncheon as well as at the cemetery. The schedule is as follows:

12:00 noon: Pizza lunch in the social hall, directly following religious school dismissal
12:30-12:45: Leave for cemetery
1:00-1:15: Arrive at cemetery

Please email me at acheryl21 at gmail.com by Tuesday, May 17th if you plan on joining us for the luncheon and trip, or just the trip. Thank you!

Our Souper Social Action!

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

We won the Souper Bowl with a score of 103 soup items collected!! This number included cans, microwavable cups, containers and cellophane wrapped soup mixes... all in a variety of shapes, sizes and flavors. A special thank you to everyone who "played" in our first ever Souper Bowl! A very, very special shout out to our religious school students and madrachim who helped raise the "score". I see a "Souper Bowl II" in our future....

Purim is coming, so in the true tradition of the holiday... let's fill a "community" Shalach Manot basket! When you attend the Purim service and festivities, please bring a nonperishable food item (or two or three) and place in the basket in the vestry room as you enter the sanctuary. Food can be brought on both days of the celebration (Sunday, March 20th and Wednesday, March 23rd). These donations as well as all food items collected through the end of March will be delivered to the JFNNJ (Jewish Federation of Northern NJ) for their March Mega Food Drive.

Thinking ahead... we will be collecting all leftover, unopened Passover food during the first three weeks in May. It will be brought to the Helping Hands Food Bank in Teaneck. A special box will be placed in the vestry for these donations.

Join Us!

Wednesday, March 9th the Social Action Committee met at 7:30 PM in the Social Hall. Our social action projects have been successful due to the incredible responses of our congregants, whenever called upon. In essence, you are all members of this committee! During this meeting members brought in new ideas, discussed the old ones and welcomed those who "never knew we existed" as a group. Couldn't attend? Just email your ideas to me. Thanks!

Thank you to all who donated to the Winter Clothing Drive. Items were brought to the Council of Jewish Women's thrift shop in Bergenfield.

The general food, household items and toiletries collection is ongoing.

Special regards,

Annette Social Action Committee Chairperson

Religious School News

From the pages of Kadima, the Newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

Religious School News

     from

Cantor Sandy Horowitz

Religious School Director

Shalom!

As I’m writing this column, we just had our first Shabbat Family Service of the year, featuring the Seventh grade–they were great! They led prayers and songs throughout the service, and shared their thoughts about the mitzvah of caring for the environment. Thank you to Rabbi Schwartz and their teachers, Sabina Albirt and Michael Dworkis, for preparing them. Our next two Shabbat Family Services are coming up, led by the Fifth and Sixth grades; everyone is encouraged to attend these special services, and support our students ́ participation in religious worship.

Tot Mitzvah is our new program for pre-school age children, led by Doris White. With (free!) programs six times during the year, we welcome anyone who would like to join in the fun. Come spend an hour of music, arts and crafts and stories with your little one – this month Doris will be having an early Chanukah celebration with the tots on November 23rd.

Thank you to everyone who so generously brought in books for our October Book Drive, as we participated in the Jewish Federation of NJ’s Annual Mitzvah Day. These will help so many students in our area who are in need of books.

Here are some other important Religious-School-related dates to note during November and December:

  • Saturday Nov. 15-Bar Mitzvah of Justin Priblo
  • Friday Nov. 21-Shabbat Family Service featuring the Sixth Grade students
  • Sunday Nov. 23-Tot Mitzvah
  • Sunday Nov. 30-NO RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Thanksgiving weekend
  • Saturday, Dec. 13-Bat Mitzvah of Katie Schuller
  • Friday Dec. 19-Shabbat Family Service featuring the Fifth Grade students
  • Sunday Dec. 28- NO RELIGIOUS SCHOOL Winter Recess

Social Action Summary

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Neither cold, ice nor snow kept Adas Emuno congregants from banding together in order to reach out to those in need!  From the last issue of Kadima to now, here are some of the ways in which that took place:

Clothing Drive—We collected approximately 30 bags of clothing for children, women and men; thank you, thank you!  Cantor Nancy Beller-Krieger filled her car numerous times with these donations and had them picked up from her home by House of Blessing, which gives the clothes to anyone in need.  A sincere thank you to our Cantor for putting us in touch with this wonderful organization and for the "delivery service"!

Good Deeds Day
The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey held a county wide food drive, culminating on Good Deeds Day, which our congregation was involved with.  We collected food and delivered it to the Federation's office in Paramus.  Thank you to all who donated, with special appreciation to Lauren Rowland and Richard Alicchio for their work on this project.  A "SUPER SPECIAL THANK YOU" to Hannah Scowden, who volunteered her time at the Federation's office on Good Deeds Day, helping to divide up food donations so that various food banks received them.  Good for you, Hannah; great job!!!!!  Many people did NOT go hungry because of your help!  We are sooooo very proud of you!!!  Oh, and thank you for bringing your mom, Sandy Zornek!

Please continue to bring nonperishable, unopened, unexpired food to the temple, to be delivered to the Center for Food Action in Englewood.  Apparently, the shelves are somewhat in need.

Soda can tabs continue to be collected for Ronald McDonald House. Happy springtime, everyone!

Regards,

Annette

Spring Into Social Action

From the pages of Kadima, the newsletter of Congregation Adas Emuno:

A Report from Annette DeMarco
Social Action Committee Chairperson

Hi All!

Comfort food....  It's what goes best with the weather we have been enduring (maybe a bowl of homemade soup or a cup of hot chocolate after shoveling snow?).  As we know, however, for some folks, any food is comforting and welcomed, as it is not readily available to them.  It is for this reason that Adas Emuno has signed up to be a drop-off site for the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey's (JFNNJ) county-wide food drive.

How It Works: Through March 2, temple members can bring food at any time they will be at the temple.  For the general public, food drop-off day will be Sunday, March 2, from 9:30 am-12:30 pm at the main entrance of our temple. (This is the same day as Magevet will be giving a concert here at Adas Emuno at 2 pm, so that would also be a good time to bring food items. Please pass the word!)

THE NEXT STEP:

Sunday, March 9 is Good Deeds Day, sponsored by the JFNNJ.  The Federation is asking for volunteers to divide up the food donations.  This will take place at the Federation's office, 50 Eisenhower Drive, Paramus, from 2-4pm.  This is a wonderful opportunity for families to become involved in social action, as there are no age restrictions!  There is, however a need to register at <www.jfnnj.org/gooddeedsday>. Please email me to let me know if you sign up. My email is at the end of this column.

We will be collecting clothing, in good condition, for men, women and children.  The donations will be given to the non-profit charity of Calvary Lighthouse/House of Blessing in Lakewood, NJ, which gives the clothing to anyone in need.  This group works closely with social services in that area. Please bring donations to the social hall (back area) from now through March 21.  Please do not leave donations after this date, as there is nowhere to store them. A heartfelt “thank you” to Cantor Nancy Beller-Krieger, who informed me of this organization and has very kindly offered to transport the donations to her home where they will be picked up Ongoing: Tabs from soda cans are still being collected for Ronald McDonald House. General food drive for the Center for Food Action is always ongoing! Please bring to back room of the sanctuary. Thanks again for your support!

Annette acheryl121 at gmail.com

BLOOD DRIVE: Sunday, March 30 9 AM to 3 PM. Emma Schuller started this project last year as her bat mitzvah project and hopes to make it an annual event at Adas Emuno. Please bring a photo ID. You must be 16 or over to donate blood. Open to the community. Thank you to Emma and her mother, Zina, for coordinating this effort.

Join Us for a Talk on Religion and State in Israel

Come join us this Sunday, November 11th at 10:00 AM in the Congregation Adas Emuno Social Hall for a special Adult Education event featuring guest speaker Avinoam Segal-Elad.

Avinoam Segal-Elad is the Director of the Center for Israel Engagement, Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey, and an experienced attorney who has practiced in Israel's Supreme Court.  He will speak about Religion and State in Israel and the Israeli legal system, and discuss recent cases in the Israel Supreme Court, particularly those brought by the Reform Movement.

Avinoam was born in Jerusalem and grew up there. He is married and a proud father of two boys and a girl.

After graduating high school, he was drafted to the IDF–Israeli Defense Force–and volunteered to serve in a special anti-tank unit in the paratrooper’s brigade, as a soldier and late on as an officer.

One Minute of Silence for the Munich 11

The following is a message from the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey:

JOIN US: ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE FOR MUNICH 11

We invite you to join the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey  in observing a personal moment of silence wherever you are, at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, July 27, to remember the 11 Israeli athletes, coaches, and referees murdered at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

The 2012 Summer Olympics, which begin in London on July 27, marks 40 years since that horrific moment. Since then, the bereaved families have repeatedly asked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to observe a minute of silence in memory of the Munich 11. Although a petition has been signed by nearly 100,000 individuals, the IOC has refused to undertake this action. (Click here to link to the petition.)

In order to heighten awareness of and support for this important memorial ceremony, please consider commemorating this tragedy by observing this moment of silence. We are also asking local synagogues to remember the athletes at Shabbat services on Saturday, July 28, by reciting a special prayer, mentioning it in sermons, holding a moment of silence, or any other method the community will find meaningful.

The names of the 11 Israeli Olympic Team members are:

  • Mark Slavin, 18, Wrestler
  • Eliezer Halfin, 24, Wrestler
  • David Berger, 28, Weightlifter
  • Ze'ev Friedman, 28, Weightlifter
  • Yossef Romano, 31, Weightlifter
  • Andre Spitzer, 27, Fencing coach
  • Moshe Weinberg, 33, Wrestling coach
  • Amitzur Shapira, 40, Track coach
  • Yossef Gutfreund, age 40, Wrestling referee
  • Yakov Springer, 51, Weightlifting judge
  • Kehat Shorr, 53, Shooting coach
Thank you in advance,

Rabbi Neal Borovitz, Chair
Jewish Community Relations Council

Joy Kurland, Director
Jewish Community Relations Council
