Social Action Committee Chairperson
Approximately one month has passed since we cooked for and served at the shelter in
Hackensack. We served to over 75 people (a smaller group than we had been told to prepare
for), but if more people had shown up, we would have been ready, due to this congregation's very
generous volunteers. Toda rabba to Debby and Rabbi Barry Schwartz, Cantor Sandy Horowitz,
Marilyn, Cheryl, Rich, Joan O., Kate, Sandy Z. and Michael S., Fanny, Michael F., Virginia, Elka,
Claudia, Kim M., Carol, Jerry, Lauren, Rachel, Michael R., Joan R., Norm, Doris, Jody, Vincent,
Randi, Pearl and Ronald! A special thank you to Marilyn, who communicates with "Family
Promise", sets this program up for us and remains "on call" regarding my emails. To our temple
youth: Skylar, Melissa, Ethan and Drew... you did us proud, as well as yourselves!
New project. For the month of January, we will be collecting toiletries [hotel, sample and full
sized] as well as cleaning products for Oelhaf House. This organization works with Shelter OurSisters, which deals with the housing issues of the people being helped. Please leave donations
in the back of the social hall, in the labeled box. Thank you to Cheryl Alicchio for bringing this to
our attention.
Food collection continues. About 10 bags and 2 cases of food plus a check donation were just
brought to the Center for Food Action. Nice....!!!!
Closed collections. Winter adult outerwear was brought to Council of Jewish Women Thrift Shop in
Bergenfield instead of Women’s Center in Englewood, due to unforeseen circumstances. The
shop was very grateful for the donation! Soda tabs will be sent to Ronald McDonald House.
Social Action seems to be a part of life that is always in need. You, the members of Adas Emuno,
have made this aspect of our congregation very successful during 2014. Sincerest thanks to all,
for your good hearts and willingness to go the extra mile. A happy and healthy 2015 to
everyone!

Neither cold, ice nor snow kept Adas Emuno congregants from banding together in order to reach out to those in need! From the last issue of Kadima to now, here are some of the ways in which that took place:
Clothing Drive—We collected approximately 30 bags of clothing for children, women and men; thank you, thank you! Cantor Nancy Beller-Krieger filled her car numerous times with these donations and had them picked up from her home by House of Blessing, which gives the clothes to anyone in need. A sincere thank you to our Cantor for putting us in touch with this wonderful organization and for the "delivery service"!
Good Deeds Day—The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey held a county wide food drive, culminating on Good Deeds Day, which our congregation was involved with. We collected food and delivered it to the Federation's office in Paramus. Thank you to all who donated, with special appreciation to Lauren Rowland and Richard Alicchio for their work on this project. A "SUPER SPECIAL THANK YOU" to Hannah Scowden, who volunteered her time at the Federation's office on Good Deeds Day, helping to divide up food donations so that various food banks received them. Good for you, Hannah; great job!!!!! Many people did NOT go hungry because of your help! We are sooooo very proud of you!!! Oh, and thank you for bringing your mom, Sandy Zornek!
Please continue to bring nonperishable, unopened, unexpired food to the temple, to be delivered to the Center for Food Action in Englewood. Apparently, the shelves are somewhat in need.
Soda can tabs continue to be collected for Ronald McDonald House. Happy springtime, everyone!

Hi All!
Comfort food.... It's what goes best with the weather we have been enduring (maybe a bowl of homemade soup or a cup of hot chocolate after shoveling snow?). As we know, however, for some folks, any food is comforting and welcomed, as it is not readily available to them. It is for this reason that Adas Emuno has signed up to be a drop-off site for the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey's (JFNNJ) county-wide food drive.
How It Works: Through March 2, temple members can bring food at any time they will be at the temple. For the general public, food drop-off day will be Sunday, March 2, from 9:30 am-12:30 pm at the main entrance of our temple. (This is the same day as Magevet will be giving a concert here at Adas Emuno at 2 pm, so that would also be a good time to bring food items. Please pass the word!)
THE NEXT STEP:
Sunday, March 9 is Good Deeds Day, sponsored by the JFNNJ. The Federation is asking for volunteers to divide up the food donations. This will take place at the Federation's office, 50 Eisenhower Drive, Paramus, from 2-4pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for families to become involved in social action, as there are no age restrictions! There is, however a need to register at <www.jfnnj.org/gooddeedsday>. Please email me to let me know if you sign up. My email is at the end of this column.
We will be collecting clothing, in good condition, for men, women and children. The donations will be given to the non-profit charity of Calvary Lighthouse/House of Blessing in Lakewood, NJ, which gives the clothing to anyone in need. This group works closely with social services in that area. Please bring donations to the social hall (back area) from now through March 21. Please do not leave donations after this date, as there is nowhere to store them. A heartfelt “thank you” to Cantor Nancy Beller-Krieger, who informed me of this organization and has very kindly offered to transport the donations to her home where they will be picked up
Ongoing: Tabs from soda cans are still being collected for Ronald McDonald House. General food drive for the Center for Food Action is always ongoing! Please bring to back room of the sanctuary. Thanks again for your support!

BLOOD DRIVE: Sunday, March 30 9 AM to 3 PM. Emma Schuller started this project last year as her bat mitzvah project and hopes to make it an annual event at Adas Emuno. Please bring a photo ID. You must be 16 or over to donate blood. Open to the community. Thank you to Emma and her mother, Zina, for coordinating this effort.

We recently prepared a dinner and then served it to people at the shelter in Hackensack, officially known as the Housing, Health & Human Service Center. There were approximately 25 of our families involved through cooking, setting up, serving, cleaning up and/or donating needed funds. In many instances, more than one person per household participated. Now that's what I call social action the Adas Emuno way!!
The date we had was just around Christmas, so we made a holiday dinner of turkey, 11 of them, with all the trimmings. We included a bit of holiday decor, including paper goods and festive cookies and lots of smiles!
Marilyn Katz is our contact person with Family Promise. Thanks, Marilyn, for keeping us connected! Richard Alicchio is our "unofficial" PR person as well as fundraiser. Thank you for all you do! To all who made monetary donations, a special thank-you. It often takes money to help others and we are very grateful for your generosity. Please check out the names of these families on the "Donations" page of the January issue of Kadima.
Our cooks deserve to be called chefs! The food looked especially appetizing and judging by the compliments, it was delicious! It was served with smiles, respect and "heart". And I do believe we left the kitchen even cleaner than it had been (which was very clean); lots of Adas Emuno pride, there!

To our temple's youth and their friends who showed up and worked hard, smiling the whole time, well, it looks like the world is in good hands! Special thanks to Ethan Irby, Alexia Capote, Gabriella Capote, Lee Joon Choi, Maxine Walsh, Emma Walby, Louis Fischer, as well as Rich and Cheryl Alicchio’s grand-daughter, Tiffani and her friend, Katie. You made such a difference...
Back at the temple, we are still collecting food for the Center for Food Action and soda can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House.
Also, watch for details about a Blood Drive which will be held on Sunday, March 30. This event will be coordinated once again by Emma Schuller and her mom, Zina.

Thank you to those who have been donating food throughout the summer. Approximately ten bags were brought to the Center for Food Action. Special thanks to Cheryl and Richard Alicchio for helping to pack up and deliver the items. An email was sent to you recently regarding ways we can assist people in Bergen County who are still suffering from Hurricane Sandy. For anyone who responded, please share your experience in an email to me.
The collection of eye glasses, in conjunction with the Lions of Leonia, will continue throughout September. Please bring unused glasses in a labeled bag to the back of the sanctuary and place either on the table or in the small room.
Another ongoing collection is that of tabs off of soda cans, which will be given to a Ronald McDonald House and sold for their metal content, with monies used to provide families with services. Please place in the glass vase on the table outside of the sanctuary.
As the cooler months approach, please think about winter coats to be donated. Info regarding this will be forthcoming. We are also looking into donating winter clothing for adults and children. If anyone knows of places or individual families needing these items, please let me know.
When bags are given out on Rosh Hashanah to be filled with food for the Center for Food Action, there will be a "wish list" attached to each, naming the products most needed. Though these are the products most sought after, we all know that food is food when someone is hungry, so let's just fill those bags!
As the old year ends, I want to thank my wonderful committee for working with me as I "learned". The Social Action Committee is grateful to everyone who has supported our projects. Tikkun Olam, saving the world, is ongoing, so we will continue to make requests of you.
